In Portugal, the word "sé" is commonly used to refer to a cathedral, derived from the word "sede" (seat) or "Santa Sede" (Holy See). So as you travel around the country, you will see this cathedral referred to as the Sé de Lisboa, and in other cities you will find the Sé do Porto, the Sé de Braga or the Sé Velha de Coimbra, among others.
The Sé Cathedral and the 1755 Earthquake
Lisbon Cathedral was built during the 12th century and has survived major catastrophes, including the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Although some sections have been rebuilt in different styles throughout its history, the Catedral da Sé de Lisboa was designed under the direction of Gilbert of Hastings, an Englishman who served as Bishop of Lisbon at the time construction began.

Restoration of the Catedral da Sé
The current appearance of Lisbon Cathedral is the result of a restoration completed in 1930. The interior of the church, based on Romanesque architecture (a European medieval style), forms a cross with three naves and 16th-century Gothic additions.
The church Treasury preserves vestments, relics, and artifacts from different periods. The Cloister of Lisbon Cathedral contains Roman, medieval, and Moorish remains. There is a small admission fee to enter the cloister, which is well worth it if you have an interest in these kinds of treasures.
Together with other great monuments , it is one of the must-sees that you simply cannot miss on your visit to Lisbon.
