Óbidos
Portuguese Medieval Town
Óbidos
Óbidos is one of Portugal's most picturesque towns. Its fortified medieval old town offers a lovely stroll and a beautiful backdrop for memorable photographs.
Óbidos Castle is considered one of the most outstanding monuments of the Portuguese architectural heritage.

Óbidos preserves some of the most iconic structures from the Portuguese medieval era, and its name comes from the Latin term oppidum, meaning "citadel" or "fortified city".
It was recently discovered that Roman settlers were present in the area, thanks to archaeological excavations carried out very close to the village's highest hill. After the fall of Roman rule, the region came under the control of the Visigoths.
What to See in Óbidos

Óbidos Castle
The Óbidos Castle, which dates back to the 12th century, has walls up to 13 meters high made of beautiful cobblestones, as do its narrow streets.
Medieval Center of Óbidos
If you are visiting on your own, it is important to know that the most interesting part of Óbidos is its medieval historic center. This is where you will find the castle, the stone streets, and the picturesque houses that have made this such a famous and special place.
The main street of the historic center, known as "Rua Direita", will take you from the village gate, decorated with 18th-century azulejos, to the main square, called Praça de Santa María. Along this street you will find restaurants, cafés, shops, and some accommodations.

Historically, Óbidos played an important role in the Reconquista when the castle that had been taken by the Moors was recaptured, marking a triumph in the recovery of the Portuguese Extremadura region, following the conquest of Santarém, Lisbon, and Torres Vedras.
In 1210, King Afonso II "gifted" the village to his wife, Queen Urraca, beginning a long tradition of female ownership — the place later belonged to several Portuguese queens and was informally known as the Village of the Queens (Vila Das Rainhas).

Every July a medieval festival is held in Óbidos that recreates bygone eras, complete with medieval music, knights, witches, and theatrical performances.
At the beginning of each year, the Óbidos Chocolate Festival takes place, and in December, Óbidos Castle hosts the "Christmas Village" (Aldeia de Natal), a charming village with decorations, a fair, and Christmas activities.
The village is perfect for a quiet weekend getaway around Lisbon. If that sounds appealing, take a look at hotels in Óbidos. You can also take a Day Trip to Fátima, Nazaré, and Óbidos from Lisbon.
